Pharmacists improving medication therapy in children

Our Campaign for Growth

Welcome to our Campaign for Growth: Building the New PPAG website. Please see an open letter from our President, Michael Christensen, PharmD.

  3. Framing the New PPAG
  4. Our Builders
  5. Progress-to-Date

Facing new challenges seems to be a common refrain the last few years. Every sector of our national economy has been affected by the “great recession.” Pay-for- performance is a reality for health care reimbursements. Pharmacies and colleges are experiencing budget cuts. Yet, it is also a thrilling time to be in pharmacy practice as new technology, knowledge, and service models emerge. Fortunately, as pediatric pharmacists, we are experienced in navigating through challenges to benefit our pediatric patients.

PPAG is not immune from these economic pressures and changes in our health care system.  We have reached a critical point in the financial viability of PPAG. The economic conditions and environment which supported PPAG in the past can no longer move us forward. We have adapted, and we are moving to a new business plan and model for PPAG.

You might be asking, "what has the PPAG Board already undertaken in response to these conditions?"

1. We’ve cut the PPAG operational budget $175,000 (40%).
2. We’ve maintained essential PPAG services and programs.
3. We've reduced and/or eliminated expenditures on supplies, travel, rents/leases, and insurances.
4. We've reduced staff resources.
5. Additionally, the Finance Committee and the Board are evaluating the membership dues structure and the registration fees for the annual meeting to ensure that they generate adequate revenue for the organization to maintain the current limited level of operation. We, the Board, believe new partnerships and projects have the potential to begin to replace Industry support, but it will take about 12 months before we begin to realize significant revenue from these projects.

Despite these conditions, we believe that the best way to move forward is to follow through on a bold, member-created plan for growth. We acknowledge and embrace these challenging times and will continue to move toward a new PPAG!

The beauty of this bold plan is that the critical elements for success and resources are already in place. We have a powerful and relevant mission and you… our members. Yes, there are ways for you to help!

The foundation for the New PPAG has already been built. Our mission, written some 20 years ago, remains as relevant today as it was then. The purpose of PPAG is to promote safe and effective medication use in children. We believe this mission remains a solid and unified foundation for our future.
It is with great pride that we have always been, and will always be, member-driven and member-focused. Our agenda has been shaped by our members for our members. Our volunteers have made us who we are, and will shape where we go from here.

Our organizational values are giving us solid and relevant guidance for current and future directions.

PPAG believes:
  • in the value of each member's experience and expertise
  • in quality research, education, and training
  • in the importance of contributing to the medical literature
  • in increasing the awareness of the unique characteristics of children's healthcare, especially related to medication use
  • in the efficient and effective use of our resources
  • in being open to new ideas
  • in the benefits of collaboration
  • that challenging experiences promote our growth
  • in the benefits and merits of volunteerism
  • in advocating for children and their families in all medication-related issues.
  • in the prevention of adverse drug events.
Again, we believe these values and our mission provide solid guidance for future growth.

The New PPAG is focusing on strategic alliances and partnerships with other mission-driven organizations, institutions, and companies. For instance, PPAG has partnered with Zolstice to develop a safe and effective standard for acute pediatric medicine starting with the Broselow product, and we will soon be working on a program for neonatal patients.  This will be followed by critical care and other pediatric pharmacotherapy efforts. Dr. Jared Cash is chairing this effort on behalf of PPAG. Please see http://artemis.ppag.org for more information.
The New PPAG is expanding education programs to reach community pharmacists throughout the country. We are exploring partnerships to distribute and promote these educational programs. Dr. Leslie Briars is spearheading this effort.

The New PPAG is providing aged-based core competency education for pharmacists practicing in the pediatric setting. Please see http://www.ppag.org/age-based-CE/ for more information. Dr. Elizabeth Farrington is chair of this initiative.
The New PPAG is committed to promoting our members; their expertise, their successes, and their contributions to society. Dr. Catherine Tom is coordinating our KidsMeds (www.kidsmeds.info) initiatives.
The New PPAG is exploring new ways for our members to network and navigate these challenging economic times together (in person and virtually). Over the next 18 months PPAG will be developing the frame-work for formal Special Interest Groups. Pediatric pharmacy is becoming a collection of subspecialty groups. Meeting our members where they practice is important. Dr. Kay Kyllonen is heading up this effort.
The New PPAG is going to one meeting per year beginning in the Spring of 2011 and we are committed to providing more than 20 hours of continuing education at our Annual Meeting focused on pediatric pharmacy practice. Dr. Timothy Todd is chair of the education committee and is working on this transition to one meeting per year.

The New PPAG is committed to publishing an indexed high quality clinical Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Drs. Stephanie Phelps and Sherry Luedtke are implementing a plan to release our first indexed Journal by year's end.

The New PPAG is advocating for Board Certification for pediatric pharmacists world-wide.

As previously mentioned, our strength is our people, our membership. The New PPAG cannot be built without your help. Be a builder of the New PPAG! Here are a few things you can do to help us build for the future.
  • Share the importance of PPAG and invite a colleague or trainee to become a member of PPAG. Just click the "Join PPAG" link on the website.

  • Contribute your unique expertise.
    • Write pediatric pharmacotherapy CE articles targeting retail pharmacists.
    • Review and validate CE programs and sessions.
    • Moderate a listserv of similarly focused pharmacotherapists.
    • Participate in vital activities via the Advocacy, Membership, Research, and Finance Committees.

  • Contribute financially to our Association
      • Our 2010 annual goal is to generate $20,000 from the members of PPAG to support our Campaign for growth.
      • If every active member contributed just $30.00 to PPAG, we would reach our 2010 annual goal.

I am proud to have been a PPAG member for over 10 years. PPAG has helped build up my confidence during my training, shaped my career over the years, and offered me ways to maintain my professional skills as I take a leave of absence from the work force. Through PPAG opportunities, I have also discovered new interests that I continue to explore on a daily basis. PPAG has also helped me cultivate friendships, which I will definitely cherish.

Most of us can say without exaggeration that we wouldn't be who we are today without the support of fellow PPAG members. I love how the organization makes you feel special, important and valued, regardless of the size of our contributions. Our meetings are phenomenal and full of practical tips and wisdom for our various sites of practice. Our most valuable asset is the warmth we pass between each other when we gather for conference or pick up the phone and call each other with a question.

The founders and organizers of PPAG took visionary steps for pediatric practice and patients. I recently became a member again, and attended the Spring meeting in Salt Lake City. The educational content and presentations were outstanding; the collegiality was sparkling! I encourage all of our clinical pharmacists, specialists, and residents at Children's National to become active members, and vigorously support the new PPAG.

I joined, became involved, and remain because it is the only group focused on Pediatric Pharmacotherapy. I also appreciate the pediatrics education, membership diversity, and networking that helps improve practice.

I have many reasons that I am a member of PPAG. One in particular involves my involvement with my residency program. PGY1 accreditation standards note that preceptors must demonstrate leadership in advancing the profession of pharmacy through active participation in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Local and state levels are easy to obtain. PPAG allows me to be actively involved, in my case with the Membership committee, at a national level. Thanks PPAG!

PPAG has been instrumental in my professional growth over the past 10 years. I have attended many annual meetings over the years and have thoroughly benefitted both professionally and personally from each and every one of them. The info shared on Pedinet is also extremely helpful in daily practice. Thank you PPAG! I will be contributing to our campaign today.

As I was nearing the end of my PGY-1 year, I sought after a pediatric based career and seasoned, diverse role models to emulate and learn from. Then one of best mentors to be reached out to me and got me involved in one of PPAG's many committees and I was completely caught up. Publications, conferences, contacts beyond count and life-long friends later, I believe in PPAG more than ever and continue to strive to keep it strong. It is time to show how much we need PPAG as much as it needs us!

As a pediatric pharmacist in a community hospital, PPAG has opened doors to a tremendous amount of resources. The sharing of information between practioners is wonderful. It helps knowing that through PPAG I can find other pharmacists that have developed solutions for pediatric specific problems and it provides a way of sharing that information to impoved our pharamceutical care for the our kids we see.

Prior to my current position, I was the only pediatric trained pharmacist at a rather large hospital . I know there are several pharmacists in this same position. PPAG served as a network, and a life line, for me in that position! It allowed me to communicate through the list-serve for questions I had, that no one else at my institution had the training to help me with. This organization is a necessity for pharmacists who are working in, or have an interest in, pediatric pharmacotherapy.

  • Cheryl on 30-Jun-10 1:30 PM permalink

PPAG is the organization I chosse many years ago to commit my energies to. It represents exactly what I am- a pediatric pharmacist, and the CE offerings are second to none. The meetings allow me to network with other pediatric pharmacy practitioners, and the list-serves provide support on a day to day basis. The benefits are incalculable, but I am pleased to offer my monetary support also. I would like to see this organization continue to prosper and grow.

  • Jeremy on 30-Jun-10 1:28 PM permalink

PPAG has helped me grow as a clinician since joining when I was a pediatric specialty resident at UNC. Last year, even though the hospital did not help pay for my trip, I still attended the conference because I knew that I can improve my clinical skills as a pediatric clinician from the wide arrange of topics that the conference provided. I consider myself as a rookie of PPAG, but I do want to see this organization grow and continue to help improve the practice of pediatric pharmacotherapy.

PPAG has been a vital organization to many pediatric pharmacists for the last fifteen plus years. This is our pediatric organization and we need to invest in its future and assure it success as we grow and adapt to change. I am happy to contribute to this campaign as a sign of my committment to PPAG's continued growth. Please join me in helping us shape the future. This is a time of action
