Pharmacists improving medication therapy in children

4-Aug-11 8:00 AM  CST

Student Organizations Sprouting Throughout the US

Student organizations dedicated to promoting pediatric pharmacy are sprouting up throughout the country. The University of Arizona, The University of Georgia, The University of Connecticut, and Virginia Commonwealth University now have pediatric pharmacy student groups. Here is a description of each of the groups:

PediaCats (The University of Arizona)

PediaCats is a College of Pharmacy student organization committed to improving the health of children. One of the main efforts of the group will focus on advocating for health education through philanthropic events.

The mission of PediaCats is to unite students in a joint effort to improve the well being of children within our community while emphasizing the nature of pediatrics as a specialty. Please see the group's website: http://www.pharmacy.arizona.edu/students/stdorgs/pediacats.

Student Society of Pediatric Advocates (The University of Georgia)

The mission of Student Society of Pediatric Advocates is to bring awareness to the proper use of medication therapy in pediatric populations through various service and education-based initiatives. Service activities center around lending our medication based knowledge to pediatric patients and their parents in our community. Educational activities are directed toward student members in an effort to safely and effectively extend pharmacy practice to pediatric populations by building relationships with mentors and professionals in the health care community, as well as supplementing didactic coursework with lectures by specialists and our peers. Overall, SSPA advocates for the safety and happiness of young patients while learning and having fun along the way.

The Student Society of Pediatric Advocates at UGA offers a newsletter, listserv, lunch and learn lectures, and opportunities to serve the community during healh fairs and events.

Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group at the University of Connecticut

The purpose of the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group at the University of Connecticut is to promote optimal medication therapy to the pediatric patients.

PPAG-UConn meetings are at least monthly during the academic year and are open to all members and officers. PPAG-UConn offers students an opportunity to network with practicing pediatric pharmacists who provide knowledge about career opportunities, opportunities for pediatric pharmacy outreach in the local surrounding communities, social events, and fundraising to assist in funding active student members to participate in national PPAG meetings.

Pediatric Pharmacy Student Organization (Virginia Commonwealth University)

The main goal of the Pediatric Pharmacy Student Organization (PPSO) at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy is to represent the pediatric population by improving the health of children within the community and surrounding areas.

PPSO strives to advocate for pediatric health education and medication safety through various outreach and community events. PPSO offers its members the opportunity to interact with practicing pediatric pharmacists. Members speak with elementary school students about staying healthy. PPSO also participates in the annual American Fitness Run/Walk to benefit and celebrate the courage of children with cancer.
