Core Competency Series I: Physiologic and Pharmacokinetic Differences in Children, Fluids and Electrolytes and Dehydration in Children

Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Understand the developmental reason children are heart rate dependent
Comprehend why respiratory diseases are more common in infants and toddlers
Understand the immunologic reason for more aggressive antibiotic treatment of febrile children
Describe the differences in pharmacokinetic parameters between children and adults
Translate basic principles of pediatric pharmacokinetics into practice and describe new research in the field of developmental pharmacology and pharmacogenomics
Using neonatal sepsis is an example, explain how gentamicin dosing an monitoring should be adjusted for neonatal patient
Describe basic fluid and electrolyte requirements for children in all age groups
Explain causes and effects of dehydration in children
Review methods for managing fluid and electrolyte abnormalities and explain the accompanying monitoring parameters
