A Breath of Fresh Air in CF Care: Updates in Treatment and Role of Pharmacy in CF Care Centers

Published by Pediatric Pharmacy Association

Summary

This education session will focus on updates related to pharmacologic therapy and pharmacy practice in management of CF, including age specific recommendations for chronic management. With increased availability of CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators to patients with CF, it is important for pharmacists to have a thorough understanding of indication, dosing (including adjustments for drug interactions), administration, and monitoring for this class of medications. The session will also discuss the possible implication of highly effective CFTR modulator therapy on other CF chronic medications and adherence. The role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians as part of the CF care team will also be highlighted with pearls on starting and evaluating new pharmacy services in this setting.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the role of pharmacologic therapy in the chronic management of cystic fibrosis (CF) across the age spectrum
2. Define the role of new and emerging CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators in the management of CF and future considerations of impact of highly effective CFTR modulators on other chronic therapy use and adherence
3. Outline processes towards the development and implementation of pharmacist and pharmacy technician practices as part of accredited CF care centers
